Early Friday evening, the victim, who is in her 30s, and three friends were sitting on a bench near Washington Street and the railroad tracks when Paredes-Castillo walked behind the bench and ripped a gold rope necklace from the victim's neck, police said.

Authorities allege he then ran away, got into a gray 2015 Ford Focus and drove away. The necklace was valued between $2,000 and $3,000.

Investigators later identified Paredes-Castillo as a suspect.

On Wednesday, Hinsdale police detectives said they saw Paredes-Castillo exiting and then re-entering the Ford Focus at a Chicago gas station.

Detectives followed the car to the 3800 block of West Gladys Avenue, where they stopped the car and took Paredes-Castillo into custody.

In an X post, Village President Greg Hart praised officers and prosecutors for their work.

"If you come to Hinsdale to commit a crime, our officers will find you, arrest you, and work with our law enforcement partners to hold you accountable under the law," Hart said. "This is why Hinsdale remains one of the safest communities in Illinois."
