Birches Assisted Living Hosts Book Sale to Help End Alzheimer’s

The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills is hosting a used book sale on September 8 to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association.

On Friday, September 8, The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills is hosting a used book sale to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The sale is open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on The Birches front porch, located at 215 55 St. in Clarendon Hills. Books in the sale will cost $1.

Books in the sale were donated from Birches employees, residents and family members to raise money for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place in Naperville on Sunday, September 17.

The Birches’ own “Team Birches” has participated in the walk for the past 15 years and will participate again this year. Every year, the team raises funds for the walk, which are then donated to the Alzheimer’s Association and used by the Association to provide Alzheimer’s support, care and research.

This year, Birches Director of Encore and Memory Services and Team Birches leader Katie Schaff Fagan decided to host a fundraising book sale, because she felt it would be an easy and inspiring way for Birches community members and members of the broader community to contribute to the cause.

“I really liked the idea of a used book sale, because it’s something that’s easy for people to contribute to,” said Schaff Fagan. “I think most people have books at home they are willing to donate, because they know they will just sit on a shelf and collect dust. Or people who stop by will be willing to take a chance on a book that catches their eye since it only costs $1.”

Team Birches has raised over $65,000 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the past 15 years, and is already more than half way toward its $3,000 fundraising goal for this year.

“We hope the book sale will get us to that $3,000 goal, and maybe even help us exceed it, so we can contribute as much as possible to the Alzheimer’s Association and do our part to end Alzheimer’s.”
