The Birches Celebrates Clarendon Hills History at "Daisy-Q"

Join the Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills for a backyard barbecue and daisy celebration on May 28.

On May 28, The Birches Assisted Living is honoring the history of Clarendon Hills with “Daisy-Q,” a backyard barbecue and daisy celebration. “Daisy-Q” will take place at 12 p.m. on The Birches outside dining patio, located at 215 55th Street in Clarendon Hills.

The Birches’ “Daisy-Q” is inspired by an important piece of Clarendon Hills history. In the 1870s, one of the town’s founding fathers, Henry C. Middaugh, accidentally seeded his 270 acre plot with daisy seed instead of grass seed, resulting in a field filled with daisies that spread quickly to other areas of the town. Although Middaugh was frustrated by his mistake, everyone in the town (including Middaugh) thought the result was quite beautiful. The town even changed its name to “Daisy Fields” and attracted throngs of tourists who came to pick the daisies.

Clarendon Hills still commemorates its connection to daisies every year with the Daisy Days Festival in June. This year, however, The Birches would like to help kick off Daisy Days season by hosting a barbecue and by planting a daisy field that memorializes Clarendon Hills’ historical relationship with the daisy.

“The daisy fields of Clarendon Hills are such a unique and beautiful part of the village’s history,” said Birches’ Community Liaison Robin Lacine. “The Birches would like to recapture that history by planting daisies right in our own backyard.”

The barbecue, which will include food, drinks and a visit from the Good Humor Ice Cream truck, will culminate with the sowing of a daisy field on The Birches’ property. All community members are invited to join The Birches in celebrating Clarendon Hills’ daisy-filled history. To RSVP, call 630-581-8243.
