Central Teacher Blasts Principal Over 'Abusive' Behavior In School

HINSDALE, IL – A Hinsdale Central High School teacher last week denounced the school's administration over its handling of her complaints that teachers have "verbally and emotionally" abused students.

Special education teacher Nancy Harper-Eich made her statement last week during an open meeting of the school board. The board did not respond, which is its policy during the public comments portion of meetings.

Asked to respond, the school's spokesperson, Alex Mayster, said Hinsdale District 86 was committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

"Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority," Mayster said in an email. "Our Administration, Staff and the Board continuously work together to ensure our school operations are reflective of this commitment."

In her comments, Harper-Eich said, "The acceptance of any type of abuse of our students is beyond reprehensible. Sadly, poor behavior continues to be unchecked and unaccounted for."

She continued, "I want to emphasize that while not the norm at Hinsdale, I have personally witnessed yelling, finger-wagging in the face, swearing and belittling of our students in what should be the safest environment of all – the classroom."

Last school year, Harper-Eich said she brought her concerns forward, but she was unable to have a conversation with the school's principal, Bill Walsh.

Rather, Harper-Eich, who has taught at the school for nearly three decades, said she was handed off to the assistant principal for operations. That person, she said, is tasked with handling such things as new technology, desks and lighting.

This school year, she said she again witnessed such "abusive" behavior, so she composed a statement in November. But the administration failed to even acknowledge the statement, she said.

"The message to students: It's OK for teachers entrusted with their safety and education to swear, scream, yell and belittle them," said Harper-Eich, a Hinsdale resident. "Leaders will simply switch the players around and avoid the unpleasantness. Students saw all of this."

She said she remained deeply saddened by the ongoing situation.

"I am embarrassed and ashamed for not speaking up louder and sooner," Harper-Eich said. "I sincerely apologize for that."

According to the district's records, Harper-Eich is retiring at the end of the 2027-28 school year.
