HINSDALE, IL — A pursuit of a Chicago man with a loaded gun ended in a Hinsdale neighborhood late Monday afternoon, local police said.

Kevonta Robinson, 19, was arrested on a number of charges after the chase. His bond was set at $1 million.

About 3:30 p.m. Monday, a state police officer saw a speeding 2016 Honda CRV traveling west on Interstate 290 near Mannheim Road, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. The officer learned the Honda was carjacked in Cook County earlier that day and involved in two armed robberies, prosecutors said.

The officer tried to stop the driver, later identified as Robinson, but the suspect continued, according to the release. He then went onto southbound Interstate 294 and west on Ogden Avenue, entering Hinsdale and driving into oncoming traffic, police said. He also was accused of running a red light at Ogden and Oak Street.

Robinson then headed south on Oak and stopped near Oak and Fuller Road, where he got out and ran away, according to the release. He went to hide in an open garage on Oak and was captured, police said.

During an investigation, officers found a loaded Beretta 9 mm pistol with one bullet in the chamber in a back yard, where he is believed to have passed through, police said.

"The allegation that Mr. Robinson led police on a car chase in the middle of the afternoon just blocks from a grammar school is unconscionable," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the news release. "What’s even more disturbing, if that’s even possible, is the allegation that this defendant then ran from the police through a residential neighborhood, again in the middle of the afternoon, with a loaded weapon. The unprecedented levels of violence we have seen recently in DuPage County, such as alleged in this case, will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force and effect of the law."

Robinson was charged with two counts of armed violence with a handgun and counts of aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and burglary.
