D-86 May Lay Off Two Teachers

School board is holding a rare Saturday meeting to make a decision.

HINSDALE, IL — The Hinsdale High School District 86 board is holding a rare Saturday meeting to consider laying off two teachers and reducing another two to part time. All four are listed as employees at Hindale Central.

The board is set to vote at a 2 p.m. meeting Saturday to lay off an English teacher and a social studies teacher after this school year. It also is expected to decide whether to reduce an English teacher and a social studies teacher to part time. A school spokesman said the staff's recommendations for the four teachers were based on enrollment.

Last year, the school board voted to lay off a dozen teachers. The board apparently backed off later on at least some of the layoffs because the two on Saturday's list were on last year's. School districts must meet deadlines for layoff decisions, so they often reverse themselves later when financial outlooks improve.
