D181 Invites Community to Participate in Special Task Force

District 181 is inviting the community to attend a meeting of its Holidays and Religious Observances Calendar Task Force on April 18.

Community Consolidated School District 181 is inviting parents, staff, and community members to attend a meeting of the District's Holidays and Religious Observances Calendar Task Force. The meeting will take place on Monday, April 18 from 9:30-11am at the D181 Administration Center, located at 115 West 55th Street in Clarendon Hills. Those interested in participating are asked to RSVP online: http://tinyurl.com/D181TaskForceApril2016.

Director of Communications Bridget McGuiggan explains that the task force met once in the fall, and will be meeting now to expand on their initial work. "We will continue our discussion about observances and holidays, and how we can best educate ourselves around the impact of those dates on students and staff related to the school day and the District calendar." McGuiggan notes that when planning major school events and assemblies, field trips, assessments, and other key dates, the District is working to be more proactive in its scheduling. "One outcome of our work will be a more robust calendar, that not only identifies the dates of many significant events, but briefly explains what those events mean so that we can strengthen our understanding and be increasingly mindful in our planning." She goes on to explain that some observances call for students and staff to fast for example, while some may require a student be absent from school, and others are simply observed at home. "The task force is a means to have open discussion about those events and allows us to learn together, and celebrate our diverse community."
