District 181 Concludes 2014 Summer Learning Program

Community Consolidated School District 181 is pleased to announce a successful run of its 2014 Summer Learning Program. From June 12 to July 3, the program provided a series of classes primarily held at Prospect School, for children in kindergarten through seventh grade. This year’s program welcomed more than 575 registered students.

The enrichment and advanced learning courses mixed individual and group work for optimal achievement. Many classes incorporated technology to help students expand their learning opportunities, such as keyboarding and digital art. Other classes included music lessons, hands-on math and science activities, theater, art, and creative writing. The diverse Summer Learning Program offered a rich learning environment for students to not only enjoy their summer through the fun and challenging courses, but to also feel more prepared as they enter the new school year, such as through “6th Grade Boot Camp,” where the soon-to-be middle schoolers practiced skills ranging from how to follow a class schedule to using a combination lock

Whether making craft projects or solving math problems, students expressed enthusiasm about the program. Incoming eighth grader Sidney Lacy, who was enrolled in “Guitar Fun for Everyone,” said he enjoyed the class and the process of writing original music. Guitar teacher Ruth Ann Korwel noted, “I get excited when I see their excitement. It is rewarding to see how much they learn and their eagerness to show off their new skills.”

Summer School Administrator Rocky May said this year’s Summer Learning Program was the strongest yet. “Our teachers did a phenomenal job planning and leading a series of courses that were engaging for students. The classes were not only educational, but also helped students look forward to coming back to school.” District 181 students return to school August 25, 2014.
