Garden Club Celebrates Centennial With Donation

The Garden Club of Hinsdale kicked off its 100th year with a canned food drive to benefit HCS Family Services. The Garden Club of Hinsdale is one of the oldest garden clubs in the state of Illinois. The club meets monthly to discuss gardening topics, plan philanthropy activities, and share fellowship. The club serves the community in various ways including maintaining the gardens at the Hinsdale train station, educating the public about proactive gardening techniques, and providing scholarships to local students.

“As we begin to celebrate our 100th year, in these unprecedented times, we thought it important to give back to our community,” said Shannon Weinberger, club president. This month, the club collected more than 550 pounds of canned food and delivered the donated items to HCS Family Services. In addition, over $1,000 were donated from club members. HCS Family Services hosts a food pantry twice a week providing emergency food for people in need living in southeast DuPage County and far west Cook County.

The Garden Club of Hinsdale plans to continue to celebrate their centennial with more donations to HCS at Thanksgiving and for Christmas donating scarves made by members during the annual, now virtual, Holiday Workshop. “In spite of all the struggles this year has presented, we feel like the Garden Club can really help brighten people’s lives not only with plants and flowers, but in other ways too,” Shannon said.
