Gift Card Scam, DUIs: Hinsdale Cops

A resident buys gift cards in response to a scammer claiming to be a Social Security agent.

HINSDALE, IL — In the last week, Hinsdale police handled cases involving a gift card scam, DUIs, a hit-and-run arrest, check fraud, a stolen political flag and driving violations. Here's information from the latest police reports:

Gift card scam

  • A resident in the 600 block of South Quincy Street received a call Dec. 1 from someone claiming to be an agent from the Social Security administration. The person instructed the resident to buy $2,500 in gift cards to investigate illegal activity involving her Social Security number. The victim bought $2,414 in gift cards and texted the suspect pictures of the cards.

DUI

  • Dennis Craven, 52, of Elmhurst, was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Dec. 1 at York and Fuller roads on charges of DUI and speeding. He refused testing to determine his blood-alcohol content. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
  • Mashanda M. Davenport, 41, of South Holland, was arrested about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of West Ogden Avenue on charges of DUI, speeding, transportation of open alcohol by a driver and not driving on the right of a two-lane road. She submitted to testing that indicated she was over the legal limit. She was released and given a date to appear in court.

Hit-and-run

  • Alexandra A. Bednar, 47, of Brookfield, was cited at 6:30 p.m. Friday on a charge of failing to give information after a personal injury accident. Police were called to a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a car in the Hinsdale hospital's east garage. Bednar was released and was given a date to appear in court.

  • The rear driver's side of a car was hit while it was parked between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 2 in the 10 block of South Madison Street.
  • A light post in the front yard of a house in the 300 block of East Fourth Street was damaged between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday.

Check fraud

  • A resident in the 5800 block of Woodmere Drive informed police Friday that a check that she mailed to a company in Morris was stolen. She was alerted that the company did not receive the check. She contacted her bank and learned the check was cashed at an ATM by an unknown person.

Political flag stolen

  • A flag for President Donald Trump was stolen between Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 in the 10 block of North Vine Street. The pole from which it was hanging was damaged. Police did not indicate the message on the flag.

Driving violations

  • Zanaida J. James, 33, of Berwyn, was cited shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of East Ogden Avenue on a charge of driving with a revoked license. The suspect was released and given a date to appear in court.
  • Dyiesha S. Watson, 19, of Chicago, was cited shortly after 3 a.m. Nov. 29 in the 200 block of West Ogden Avenue on charges of no valid driver's license, speeding and operating an uninsured vehicle. She was released and given a date to appear in court.
  • Brendan M. Whalen, 33, of Western Springs, was cited about 10:30 a.m. Saturday at 55th and Elm streets on charges of driving with a revoked license, obstructing identification and operating an uninsured vehicle. According to a police report, Whalen gave false identifying information to officers. He was released and given a date to appear in court.

Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
