HINSDALE, IL - The Graue Mill Flood Protection Improvements project in Hinsdale/DuPage County has received an award from local American Public Works Association chapters and will be in consideration for a national award soon. The project, which was designed to reduce the heavy flooding that occurs in areas near Salt Creek in DuPage County, was selected as the Public Works Project of the Year in the Environment category for projects under $5 million by the Fox Valley Branch and the Chicago Metro Chapter of the APWA.

“The Graue Mill Condominiums have experienced significant flooding issues in the past some of which were so serious that the residents had to be evacuated by first responders using boats and large dump trucks,” said Assistant Village Manager Brad Bloom. “This flood mitigation project will prevent future incidents and give the residents peace of mind to not have to worry every time rain is forecast. This project is a great example of State, County and local government working in partnership with residents to solve a long-term problem. ”

The Graue Mill project, which included the installation of flood walls, pump stations and berms, is one of two Christopher B. Burke Engineering=designed projects to win an APWA award. The other is the Chicago Avenue/Sheridan Road Multi-Modal Corridor Improvement project in Evanston.
