Here's What District 181 Is Planning For New Year

The district, which serves Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills students, is choosing a mix of in-person and remote learning.

CLARENDON HILLS, IL — School District 181, which serves elementary and middle school students in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills, is offering a mix of in-person and remote learning for the fall. The school board decided on that approach Monday after lengthy discussions at two meetings.

Under the plan, parents will have the choice of a fully remote option for the next school year.

Hinsdale High School District 86, Elmhurst School District 205 and Darien School District 61 are among those offering a blended approach similar to District 181's. The approach is referred to as a "hybrid model." At the same time, more and more school districts, including Lyons Township High, are going full remote.

District 181's blended approach means that students' time in the school buildings will be cut by half, officials said. Superintendent Hector Garcia said that to establish a viable plan, the district needed to delay the start of school, so the board postponed it by a week. The first day of student attendance is set for Sept. 8.

The board decided to follow the guideline of six feet of social distancing during school days. This means reducing the number of students per classroom.

"Our administrative team will continue to work diligently on our framework and develop and share a hybrid model plan that is an appropriate fit for our District," Superintendent Hector Garcia said in a statement. "As we develop these plans, we will continue to work closely with and incorporate the feedback of key stakeholders, union leadership, Board members, our D181 Transition Team."

District 181 serves about 3,800 students and employs 300 teachers, according to the Illinois Report Card.
