HINSDALE, IL — A Westmont man is accused of breaking into a Hinsdale house and taking electronic equipment and a Jeep Wrangler. He was seen shortly before ringing the doorbell of another house. Dustin Petty, 48, was charged and his bail was set at $100,000 on Monday.

About 10 p.m. Saturday, Petty rang the doorbell at a house in the 100 block of Lincoln Street and then covered the doorbell camera, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Moments later, the homeowner saw him peek into a window, police said. While officers were at the Lincoln Avenue house, they received a second call about a person inside a nearby house in the 100 block of Washington Street.

A short time later, Petty was found by Westmont police officers at a Speedway gas station in Westmont. Through an investigation, authorities identified Petty as the person at both houses, the news release said.

According to the release, Petty was in possession of items stolen from the Washington house, including two cellphones, a credit card and an ID card. Officers also found a Jeep Wrangler in the Speedway parking lot that was registered to the Washington resident.

“It is alleged that under the cover of night, Mr. Petty entered the residence on Washington and stole not only expensive electronic equipment, but also a Jeep Wrangler. His alleged actions violated the safety and security provided by a home and will be met by the full force of the law," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
