Hinsdale Car Theft: Chicago Man Charged

A Chicago man has had his bond set at $30,000 after being accused of stealing a car from a driveway of a Hinsdale home, officials said.

HINSDALE, IL — A Chicago man has had his bond set at $30,000 after being accused of stealing a car from a driveway of a Hinsdale home, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said. Yarmel Williams, 26, has been charged with one count of unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, which is a Class 2 felony. Williams appeared at a bond hearing Thursday in front of Judge Robert Miller.

According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office, on Feb. 22, the owner of the car called Hinsdale Police to report his cars had been stolen, one from the garage and one from the driveway. On April 4, Williams was seen entering one of the cars in a Burr Ridge parking lot. He was arrested and taken into custody.

“It is alleged that during the evening of Feb. 22, Mr. Williams was involved in the theft of a car from the driveway of a Hinsdale residence,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a release. “Anyone suspected of this type of criminal activity in DuPage County will be caught, charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Berlin added that residents should take precautions to minimize your chances of being a victim of car thieves. You should not leave your keys in your car, lock your doors even when parked in the driveway, and keep valuables out of sight.

“This arrest represents a pattern of thefts and burglaries that occur during the overnight hours involving unlocked cars where key fobs have been left in the vehicle,” Hinsdale Chief of Police Brian King said in a release. “The Hinsdale Police Department will aggressively pursue these cases but we ask residents to do their part by locking their cars and securing their keys.”
