Hinsdale Census: More People, More Diverse

U.S. Census releases demographics for Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and other towns.

HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills have become more diverse over the last decade, and they have increased in population, U.S. Census numbers show.

According to recently released 2020 Census numbers, Hinsdale's population rose to 17,935, a 6.7 percent increase from a decade before. Its population was 16,816 in 2010. The village saw a greater percentage increase in population than Elmhurst, La Grange, Western Springs and Burr Ridge. Darien saw a slight decrease.

In Clarendon Hills, the population increased to 8,702, from 8,427, a 3.3 percent hike.

As for the racial breakdown, Hinsdale's non-Hispanic white population dropped to 73.8 percent, from 90 percent a decade before. In the last 10 years, Asian Americans experienced the biggest gain, rising to 12 percent, from 6.4 percent.

Hispanics now make up 7.2 percent of the population, up from 3.5 percent. African Americans edged up to 1.6 percent, from 1.3 percent.

In Clarendon Hills, the non-Hispanic white share of the population fell to 79.4 percent, down from 90.2 percent. Asian Americans jumped to 8.4 percent, from 5.1 percent. Hispanics are now 6 percent, up from 5.1 percent. And African Americans increased slightly to 1.8 percent, from 1.4 percent.

Some caveats: The Census questions from 2010 to 2020 were not apples to apples. Also, the Census reports that many more people are identifying as multiracial and many are rethinking their racial identities. Experts also believe that the design of the Census form may have caused some shifts.

Nationally, the white population dropped to 57.8 percent in 2020, from 63.7 percent a decade before. Hispanics accounted for more than half of the nation's population growth in the last 10 years, now making up 18.7 percent of the country. They made up 16 percent in 2010.

The U.S. population grew 7.4 percent in the last decade, reaching 331.4 million in 2020.
