Hinsdale Central tops York 4-0

The Red Devils score 3 goals in the second half and shutout York in the win

With ice wrapped around his ankle and crutches under his arms Hinsdale Central junior Mitch Reavis slowly made it to the bus after the Red Devils 4-0 win over York High School on Oct. 5.

"That was bit more physical then we are used to," said head coach Michael Wiggins after the game.  "How much of a win is it when you got guys walking off and you don't know if they are going to be playing for a few days?"

Reavis, who had a penalty kick goal, was one of many players to sustain an injury during the game.  Hindsdale Central's junior goalkeeper, Will Meyer came out of the game after a collision early in the second half while York's junior goalkeeper Keith Pierzchala also came out with an injury later in the period.

"We just look at the collective effort and we did a nice job defending," Wiggins said. "We have only had a couple of shutout this year so it was certainly good from that stand point."

The Red Devils got their first scoring opportunity when senior Taylor Cole intercepted a pass.  Cole looked for an open teammate but an offside penalty was called which, at the moment, looked to end the scoring threat.  However, a penalty was also called from just outside of the box.  Senior Mike Oleferchik took the free kick but sailed it over the cross bar.

Another scoring chance was set up when sophomore Mike Krohn carried the ball into York's corner.  Krohn was trapped by two York defenders but managed to draw a penalty to give the Red Devils a corner kick.

Instead of kicking to the center the Red Devils opted to hit sophomore Phillip Gutman on a quick pass outside of the box.  Gutman then centered the pass where senior Andrew Worthington headed it in.

York responded with a few of their own scoring opportunities but was unable to convert.  The half ended with the score 0-1.

"Having a 0-1 at half was a big deal," Wiggins said.  "It was important for us to make sure that we at least to care of things with regards to stepping up our play in the first ten minutes of the second half."

The game remained 0-1 for the first twenty minutes of the second half.  Each team had opportunities to score but just could not find the back of the net.

York had a chance to score when Meyer came out of goal to make a play on the ball.  Making the save, Meyer got his legs were tangled up in the process.  He came out of the game limping.

A few minutes later the Red Devils carried the ball down the field and looked to have their second goal as a cross shot got past a diving Pierzchala before it was rejected by the post. The Red Devils kept the play alive which drew a penalty inside the box for a penalty kick.

Reavis place the ball in the bottom left corner to give the Red Devils a 2-0 lead.

"A key for us is making sure we don't let teams back in the game," said Wiggins.

With 7:33 left the Red Devils expanded on their lead when junior Gareth Parsons' diving header found the back of the net.  Less than minute later the Red Devils kicked in a rebound to extend the lead to 4-0, putting the game out of reach.

Although Wiggins enjoys the win he is most concerned with the injuries suffered.

"Just getting healthy," Wiggins commented on about preparations for next game.

The Red Devils will face Glenbard West High School on Oct. 7.
