Hinsdale Chorale Presents "Mystery of the Season" Sunday, Nov. 29
Annual Winter Concert Is a Transition Between Thanksgiving and Christmas
Hinsdale, Ill. – Nov. 9, 2015 – The Hinsdale Chorale will perform “Mystery of the Season,” the group’s annual winter concert, Sunday, November 29, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Western Springs, 1106 Chestnut Street, Western Springs. The concert is presented under the direction of Hinsdale Chorale Music Director and Conductor Bruce Hall and accompanied by Kathy Christian. The Chorale has several new members this year, bringing the total number of voices to 23, from 14 different communities in Chicago’s western suburbs.
The program is a mixture of traditional and classical holiday pieces designed to serve as a transition between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The musical anchor for the concert is Charpentier’s “Messe de Minuit pour Noël.” Composed using the movements of the mass ordinary, the melodies are based on French folk tunes. The mass features a number of soloists taken from the chorale as well as a small instrumental ensemble.
The concert program includes some holiday favorites such as Thompson’s “Alleluia,” Lauridsen’s “O magnum mysterium,” and Holst’s “Christmas Day.” Other repertoire includes Houkem’s “The Rune of Hospitality” with guitar accompaniment, and the highly entertaining (and hilarious) “A Musicological Journey through the Twelve Days of Christmas.” Other works by Mendelssohn, Tallis, Staheli, and Hofheins fill out the program.
