HINSDALE, IL – The director of security for Hinsdale High School District 86 is resigning after five years on the job.

Kevin Simpson, who started as the director in August 2017, is set to leave Oct. 12. His resignation was listed in the personnel report prepared for Thursday's school board meeting.

According to his LinkedIn page, Simpson served in the Hinsdale Police Department for nearly 29 years. He was chief for the last year and a half and deputy chief for more than a dozen years.

In an interview Wednesday, Simpson said he gave so much notice because he wants to train his successor.

He said he and his wife, Stephanie Simpson, have had a place in Kennebunkport, Maine, for the last five years. His wife is now Kennebunkport's recreation director. And their two children live and work in nearby Boston.

"My 1-year-old grandson is a priority," Simpson said.

He described himself as proud of what has been established with the district's security. He credited the help of Superintendent Tammy Prentiss, her predecessor Bruce Law and the school board, among others. And he said the district has been able to put together an accomplished security team.

"It's been the perfect situation for me. I've loved what we have done," Simpson said. "I think we took the lead in the way we bolstered security and integrated some of that in the safest environment possible."

The personnel report lists Simpson's salary as $81,509.

Simpson retired from the police department with a salary of $140,000, according to a Chicago Tribune story in 2017. He started with a $105,000 pension, which increases 3 percent every year, the newspaper reported.

He hasn't worked long enough in District 86 to collect a second pension.

District 86 has 17 security officers.
