HINSDALE, IL – The Hinsdale High School District 86 board on Thursday approved a new four-year contract with the local teachers union, which gives teachers a 4.25 percent raise in the first year, the district announced.

The board voted 5-2 for the agreement. Members Jeff Waters and Peggy James dissented.

This was a major piece of business for the board to finish before a new majority takes control in May.

According to a news release, the average total cost increase of the contract, including pay and benefits, will amount to 2.6 percent a year.

The district said the 4.25 percent increase is 85 percent of the consumer price index.

For the second year, the hike will be determined through negotiations about the supervision of students during the school day, according to the release.

For the third and fourth years, the raises will be 75 percent of the consumer price index, the district said.

Employees who supervise extracurricular activities will receive an increase in their stipends of 50 percent of the consumer price index for each year of the contract.

According to the news release, the contract calls for a minimum of 28 early release Wednesdays, with class getting out at 1:55 p.m.

Last year, the district replaced late start Mondays with early release Wednesdays. The board's minority objected to the change, but now it's locked in for four years.

The schedule is also set to include three "improvement days," with students dismissed at 12:35 p.m.

"Both the early release Wednesdays and district improvement days will provide teachers with the time and opportunity to engage in activities at the department, school and district levels that will promote collaboration, support professional growth and development, enhance instructional practices and benefit student outcomes," the district said.

In a joint statement, the district and union said the agreement represents the "mutual respect and admiration we have for each other."

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated that employees who supervise extracurricular activities will receive a 50 percent increase in their stipends. It should have said the increase is 50 percent of the consumer price index for each year of the contract.
