Hinsdale Doctor Going To Prison: Prosecutors

The physician also must pay a $1 million fine as part of his sentence for health care fraud.

HINSDALE, IL – A Hinsdale doctor has been sentenced to six months in federal prison and fined $1 million for submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and a private insurer, federal prosecutors said Friday.

Dr. John A. Greager II, 75, who lives in the 400 block of North County Line Road, owned Cancer Therapy Associates in Lombard. He specialized in removing moles to screen for cancer.

He pleaded guilty to health care fraud earlier this year.

Greager turned in false claims to Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois for certain health care services that he said had been provided to patients, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release. Because of his scheme, Medicare and Blue Shield ultimately paid Greager $1.7 million.

Greager, who was charged last summer, knew the services were not provided and, at times, were medically unnecessary, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors alleged Greager removed more moles from patients than were medically necessary and then dictated notes and provided paperwork to employees to submit fraudulent claims for reimbursement, authorities said.

The crimes were reported to have occurred from 2015 to 2021.

To conceal his conduct, Greager stored moles at his office and delayed sending them for pathology testing, prosecutors said. As a result, pathology reports made it appear as though Greager had removed moles on separate dates, according to the news release.

Greager's actions delayed critical testing on moles that he removed for serious illnesses, including cancer, prosecutors said.

Greager also created fake patient charts that indicated he performed procedures on dates when he was out of Illinois, the news release said.
