HINSDALE, IL – A Hinsdale man hesitated at first to undergo tests to determine whether he was driving drunk earlier this month, saying it would be embarrassing, police said.

He ultimately agreed to do so, but it didn't go well, according to a police report obtained through Patch's public records request.

The 55-year-old man, who lives in the 300 block of Hampton Place, was charged with DUI, driving without insurance and driving with a missing tire.

About 11:30 a.m. Jan. 10, police received a call that the driver of a Volkswagen GTI hit a construction barrier and may have lost a tire near Ogden Avenue and York Road, police said.

An officer caught up to the car. Its front passenger tire was shredded, with the car driving on a rim, according to the report.

The officer activated his emergency lights just as the man turned into the driveway of his Hampton Avenue house.

The man, who smelled of alcohol, told the officer he had "at least a couple" glasses of red wine, with the last being after the Chicago Bears game that night, police said. The game ended an hour earlier.

Asked to perform physical sobriety tests, the man was reluctant because he didn't want to embarrass himself. But he proceeded.

The man initially told police that he struck a curb after getting off Interstate 294, but he later said he did not remember hitting his tire, according to the report. An officer showed him the damage.

The man refused to provide a breath sample, police said.
