Hinsdale Middle School Students Engage in Hands-On Fossil Study

HMS 6th graders recently engaged in a hands-on activity to explore archaeology using fossils provided by the Field Museum of Natural History

Hinsdale Middle School sixth graders recently engaged in a hands-on activity to explore archaeology using fossils from around the world that were provided by Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. Students in teacher Shannon Donovan's social studies class analyzed and discussed the fossils, hypothesizing on their origin. The fossils ranged from fern leaves and snails to trilobites and shark teeth. "Students were excited to be able to interact with real fossils," Donovan notes. "It is a great way to introduce them to analyzing artifacts, which is a big part of middle school social studies."
