Hinsdale Murder: Suspect Held Without Bail

Dominic Sanders has been charged with the murder of Andrea Urban and is being held without bail.

HINSDALE, IL - A man charged with the murder of 51-year-old Hinsdale mother Andrea Urban is in custody and is being held without bail. Dominic Sanders, 30, of University Park, has been charged with the murder, according to a release from DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

At a press conference Saturday, State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Hinsdale Chief of Police Kevin Simpson announced that Sanders will be charged with first degree murder. Judge Michael Reidy ordered that Sanders be held without bail.

Urban, a mother of two and leukemia survivor, was found dead in her home May 4. According to the state's attorney, officers arrived at the home and found Urban lying on the kitchen floor with apparent knife injuries to her head and neck. An investigation by the Hinsdale Police Department and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team led authorities to Sanders.

Prosecutors allege that after 10 a.m. on May 4, Sanders gained entry to Urban's home. Once inside the home, a physical altercation between Sanders and Urban ensued, resulting in Sanders repeatedly striking Urban in the head and slashing her throat, Berlin said in the release. Sanders allegedly fled the scene after killing Urban, according to authorities.

Officials said Sanders was taken into custody on May 25 and arrested on an unrelated Will County traffic violation.

“The sheer brutality of this case is alarming and will be met with the full force of the law,” Berlin said. “My sincerest condolences go out to Andrea’s family and friends, particularly her children, as they attempt to come to terms with this senseless crime. This case is a textbook example of law enforcement agencies working together. Good old fashioned police work, coupled with technology and a commitment to justice allowed us to bring these charges today. I would like to thank the Hinsdale Police Department, particularly Investigators Tom Krefft and Kevin Lackey, for their truly outstanding work on this case. I would also like to thank members of the Felony Investigative Assistance Team as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Cathy DeLaMar and Jim French for their tireless efforts the past several weeks in their pursuit of justice in the memory of Andrea Urban.”

“I would like to thank the State’s Attorney’s Office, FIAT investigators and the men and women of the Hinsdale Police Department for their dedicated, meticulous, and relentless work on this case,” Simpson added. “It is because of their cooperative efforts we were able to identify and apprehend Mr. Sanders as a suspect. I would also like to thank the residents of Hinsdale for their cooperation and patience as we conducted our investigation into this horrible crime.”

Sanders’ arraignment is scheduled for June 19 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
