Hinsdale Officer Receives Lifesaving Award
Officer Louis P. Hayes Jr. was recognized for saving the life of a critically injured construction worker.

Hinsdale police officer Louis P. Hayes Jr. was recognized Aug. 18 with the prestigious Lifesaving Award, presented by the Hinsdale Village Board, for saving the life of a construction worker who had been rolled over by a pavement grinder.
Hayes arrived first to the May 26 construction incident at County Line Road and Walnut to find the severely injured worker, according to the Hinsdale Police Department.
The right leg of the 51-year-old man was nearly amputated below the knee, and he was in critical condition.

Hayes used his tactical medical training to put a tourniquet on the man’s leg to slow his blood loss. He cared for the man until fire department personnel arrived.
“Due to his dedication, commitment, training, and professionalism during a very critical situation, the actions of Officer Hayes undoubtedly saved the life of the injured,” the police department reported.
