Hinsdale Police Investigate Recent String Of Car Burglaries
Thieves will enter the car looking for valuables, but if they see car keys, then they will often steal the car as well.

HINSDALE, IL — The Hinsdale Police Department is investigating a recent rash of overnight auto thefts and car burglaries that have become prevalent in most suburban communities.
“The prevalence of unlocked vehicles often containing valuables and in some cases keys is an attractive target for thieves” Hinsdale Police Deputy Chief Tom Lillie said in a release. “In our experience, most of the cars are found unlocked by thieves.”
Lillie said that thieves will enter the car looking for valuables, but if they see car keys, then they will often steal the car as well.

“This is a crime of opportunity and we need to take away that opportunity” Lillie added in a release. “If we can just get our residents to simply lock their cars, Hinsdale will become a less attractive target.
Since 2015, the Hinsdale Police Department said it has seen an increased frequency in these types of incidents. These auto thefts and car burglaries usually happen in the early morning and overnight hours.

“We’ve been able to locate and return nearly every stolen car but valuables stolen from unlocked vehicles are rarely recovered," Lillie said.
