Hinsdale Resident Scammed On Social Media

The person lost money while trying to sell an item on the internet, police said.

HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale police released their latest blotter Tuesday. Here is information from the reports:

Scam

  • A resident in the 700 block of North County Line Road told police about a scam by a person purportedly seeking to buy an item that the resident advertised on social media. The person told the resident that she overpaid the victim using a banking app and requested the resident send $400 back. The resident sent the money back and later discovered it was a scam. The incident happened Sept. 10. It was reported two days later.

Identity theft

  • A resident in the 100 block of South Monroe Street told police that someone accessed the resident's credit card account and stole $826 in airline rewards miles Aug. 26. The crime was reported Sept. 13.
  • A resident in the 700 block of South Stough Street told police that someone used the resident's identity to open three energy accounts and charged $1,746 worth of services. The crimes happened Jan. 4 and Sept. 13.
  • A resident in the 100 block of West North Street told police that someone used the resident's identity to open a telephone account and accrued a balance of $2,092. The crime was reported Friday.
  • A resident in the 800 block of South Clay Street told police Tuesday that someone opened a cellphone account using the resident's identity and charged $178. The case is pending.

Vandalism

  • Eggs were thrown Saturday at the front door of a house in the 500 block of North Madison Street.
