Hinsdale Sees Biggest Virus Hike In 2 Months: Figures

Clarendon Hills records a 13% increase in coronavirus cases.

HINSDALE, IL — Over the last week, Hinsdale saw its biggest percentage increase in coronavirus cases since early July, according to county health authorities. As of Sunday, the cases rose 9 percent over the previous week, for a total of 337. A few weeks ago, the village experienced no weekly increase whatsoever.

Meanwhile, Clarendon Hills' cases numbered 144 as of Sunday, up 13 percent from a week before.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale's number of coronavirus-related deaths remained at 39. Clarendon Hills has recorded one virus-related death. Those numbers have not changed in some time. Hinsdale's number is likely driven by an early outbreak at the ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale had 19.1 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 12.2 in Darien, 13.4 in La Grange Park, 14.2 in Western Springs, 15.3 in Elmhurst, 16.5 in Clarendon Hills, 16.6 in DuPage County, 21.5 in Burr Ridge, 21.6 in suburban Cook County and 21.8 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Earlier in the pandemic, ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home had reported 168 coronavirus cases and 33 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. Nursing home numbers include employees who may live in other towns. Such employees are not listed as being from Hinsdale in the case numbers.

While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 250,961, up 8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 8,179 state residents.

Nationally, 6.2 million people have caught the virus, up 7 percent from the week before. A total of 188,513 people have died from the virus in the United States.
