Hinsdale Sees Small Hike In Virus Cases
Village has high rate compared to nearby towns, driven by nursing home outbreak.
HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale's number of coronavirus cases edged up by just eight in the last week, increasing to 177, from 169 a week earlier, according to Sunday's reports from county health authorities. Hinsdale's number is higher than many nearby suburbs, driven by a severe outbreak at one of its nursing homes. Neighboring Clarendon Hills, meanwhile, just saw its caseload increase by four in the last week, with its figure comparing well with nearby suburbs.

With the surge in Hinsdale cases a couple of weeks ago, the village has among the highest rates among nearby comparison towns, with 10 cases per thousand residents. The rates are 2.9 in Western Springs, 4.5 in Clarendon Hills, 4.6 in Elmhurst, 5.3 in La Grange Park, 6.5 in Burr Ridge, 7.7 in DuPage County and 10.5 in La Grange.

As of Friday, ManorCare of Hinsdale nursing home had 164 coronavirus cases and 27 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. But Hinsdale's overall number likely does not include all the nursing home cases. Nursing home numbers include employees, who may live in other towns.
While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.
As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 110,304, up 17 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 4,856 state residents. Health departments do not provide the number of deaths by municipality.
Nationally, 1.7 million people have caught the virus, and 98,035 have died from it.
