Hinsdale Sees Small Increase In Virus Cases

Outbreak at Hinsdale nursing home appears to be contained.

HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale saw just two more coronavirus cases over the last week, according to health authorities. As of Sunday, the number stood at 184, which is seven more cases than the village had nearly a month ago. For a time in early May, the Hinsdale number was driven by a severe outbreak at one of its nursing homes.

Meanwhile, neighboring Clarendon Hills saw its case number increase by two over the last week. Here is the growth in coronavirus case numbers in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills:

* Cook County reported a range of 1 to 4 cases on the Cook County side of Hinsdale on April 1. At most, Hinsdale would have had 12 cases total.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale had 10.4 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 3.5 in Western Springs, 5.6 in Clarendon Hills, 5.8 in Elmhurst, 6 in Darien, 6.2 in La Grange Park, 8.6 in Burr Ridge, 9.4 in DuPage County, 11.5 in suburban Cook County and 12.5 in La Grange.

As of Friday, ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home had reported 168 coronavirus cases and 31 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. That was the exact number of cases that the nursing home had a week before. The number of deaths increased by one over the previous week. Nursing home numbers include employees who may live in other towns.

While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 136,762, up 3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 6,647 state residents.

Nationally, 2.4 million people have caught the virus and 122,250 have died from it.
