Hinsdale Sees Smaller Virus Caseload Increase

Clarendon Hills cases rise by almost a fifth in the last week.

HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale saw 14 new coronavirus cases in a week's time as of Sunday, according to county health authorities. That amounted to a 6 percent increase. It's a smaller hike than the previous week.

Meanwhile, neighboring Clarendon Hills experienced a dozen new cases, or a 19 percent increase.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale has seen 38 coronavirus-related deaths, up one from the previous week, authorities say. Clarendon Hills has recorded one virus-related death. Hinsdale's number is likely driven by an outbreak at the ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale had 13.3 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 7.2 in Darien, 7.6 in Western Springs, 7.9 in La Grange Park, 8.5 in Clarendon Hills, 9.6 in Elmhurst, 11 in DuPage County, 11.7 in Burr Ridge, 13.3 in Hinsdale, 16.5 in La Grange and 15.8 in suburban Cook County.

As of Friday, ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home had reported 168 coronavirus cases and 33 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. Those numbers have barely budged in recent weeks. Nursing home numbers include employees who may live in other towns. Such employees are not listed as being from Hinsdale in the case numbers.

While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 161,575, up 5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,295 state residents.

Nationally, 3.8 million people have caught the virus and 139,659 have died from the disease.
