How have they made an impact?
Mr. Lawrence exemplifies what it means to be an educator who goes far beyond the classroom. In addition to his thoughtful and engaging teaching, he has spent more than a decade supporting students through extracurricular programs as a cross-country and track coach and as co-sponsor of the East Asian Students Together (EAST) club. His dedication to students is consistent, generous and deeply impactful.
What makes Mr. Lawrence especially remarkable is his commitment to cultural education and community connection. Through EAST and other school initiatives, he has supported cultural programs such as Black History Month activities and other heritage events that help build a more inclusive school environment.
His most visible impact has been helping connect Hinsdale Central with the broader community through cultural programming. In collaboration with the nonprofit Hinsdale Multicultural Arts & Education Association (HMAE) and community partners, Mr. Lawrence helped bring Lunar New Year celebrations into the school community. This initiative evolved into a collaborative effort involving the Village of Hinsdale, Hinsdale Public Library, Hinsdale Central High School, Covenant Church and members of the Chinese community, creating a new tradition of three Lunar New Year celebrations held across three consecutive weekends each year.
The high school celebration, organized by the EAST club sponsored by Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Mark Meyer, has become an important cultural event for students and families. The Feb. 15, 2026, celebration, attended by 300-400 community members and recognized publicly by District 86, highlighted the meaningful role this event now plays in strengthening community connections.
Equally important are the everyday ways Mr. Lawrence enriches students’ learning. He regularly invites parents and community members with East Asian backgrounds to speak in his classes, allowing students to hear personal experiences that deepen their understanding of global cultures. He also encourages students to attend community cultural events outside of school, helping them see how classroom learning connects to the real world.
Despite these accomplishments, Mr. Lawrence is someone who consistently places students at the center rather than himself. At community events, he encourages students to take the stage and share their voices. Behind the scenes, he quietly contributes his own time and talents — such as creating promotional videos and supporting event organization — without seeking personal recognition.
Teachers like Mr. Lawrence shape not only what students learn, but who they become. Through athletics, cultural programs and mentorship, he models generosity, curiosity and respect for diverse perspectives.
As a parent who has known him for many years, I have seen firsthand how much he gives to our students and our community. Recognizing Mr. Lawrence would not only honor his contributions but also highlight the many dedicated educators who quietly make a profound difference in students’ lives.
What are three words that best describe them?
Dedicated, Inclusive, Inspiring.
