Hinsdale Virus Case Hike Lower Than Its Neighbors

Numbers stay the same at ManorCare nursing home, which had a severe outbreak early on.

HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale saw a lower rate of increase in coronavirus cases than nearby towns in the last week — 4 percent in Hinsdale vs. 5 percent in La Grange, 6 percent in Darien and 7 percent in Western Springs. The week before that, Hinsdale experienced no hike in cases whatsoever, the first time that had happened since June.

Meanwhile, Clarendon Hills cases numbers 120, up from 112 a week before, a 7 percent increase.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale's number of coronavirus-related deaths remained at 39. Clarendon Hills has recorded one virus-related death. Those numbers have hardly changed in weeks. Hinsdale's number is likely driven by an early outbreak at the ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale had 16.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 10.6 in Darien, 11.5 in Western Springs, 11.6 in La Grange Park, 13.3 in Elmhurst, 13.7 in Clarendon Hills, 14.9 in DuPage County, 19.1 in Burr Ridge, 19.6 in suburban Cook County and 23 in La Grange.

As of Friday, ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home had reported 168 coronavirus cases and 33 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. Those numbers have not changed in recent weeks. Nursing home numbers include employees who may live in other towns. Such employees are not listed as being from Hinsdale in the case numbers.

While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 220,178, up 7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,880 state residents.

Nationally, 5.9 million people have caught the virus, up 10 percent from the week before. A total of 180,605 people have died from the virus in the United States.
