Hinsdale Virus Cases Up By Nearly 50% Since Late July

Clarendon Hills sees just two new coronavirus cases in the last week.

HINSDALE, IL — Over the last week, Hinsdale experienced a 7 percent hike in coronavirus cases, down from the previous week's 9 percent, according to county health authorities. As of Sunday, Hinsdale has recorded 361 coronavirus cases. Since late July, the number of cases has grown nearly 50 percent.

Meanwhile, Clarendon Hills' cases numbered 146 as of Sunday, up two from a week before.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale's number of coronavirus-related deaths remained at 39. Clarendon Hills has recorded one virus-related death. Hinsdale's number is likely driven by an early outbreak at the ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home.

As of Sunday, Hinsdale had 20.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 12.9 in Darien, 13.8 in La Grange Park, 15.2 in Western Springs, 16.1 in Elmhurst, 16.7 in Clarendon Hills, 17.3 in DuPage County, 22.4 in Burr Ridge and suburban Cook County, and 22.7 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Earlier in the pandemic, ManorCare Hinsdale nursing home had a coronavirus outbreak. As of Friday, it had reported 168 coronavirus cases and 34 related deaths, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of cases remained the same over the last week, but the deaths went up by one. Nursing home numbers include employees who may live in other towns. Such employees are not listed as being from Hinsdale in the case numbers.

While Hinsdale has a hospital in its boundaries — Amita Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale — that would not explain the village's caseload. Coronavirus patients are counted at the place of their residence, not at the hospital where they are admitted, according to the state.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 261,371, up 4 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 8,309 state residents.

Nationally, 6.5 million people have caught the virus, up 3 percent from the week before. A total of 193,195 people have died from the virus in the United States.
