How Many D-86 Students Going Fully Remote?

School starts in less than two weeks at Hinsdale Central and South.

HINSDALE, IL — With classes starting in less than two weeks at Hinsdale High School District 86, the big mystery is what percentage of students will be learning entirely online.

When Patch asked this question of the district Tuesday, spokesman Chris Jasculca responded in an email, "We are still in the process of reviewing the responses we received to the planning form our families submitted last week. We will have a clearer picture of our numbers when that review is complete."

That review is expected to be completed by week's end, he said.

In Elmhurst School District 205, about 85 percent of families are opting for in-person instruction, an official said Tuesday.

Patch tried to obtain the same information from Elmhurst School District 205 on Tuesday, and it wasn't able to get an immediate answer.

District 86 is dividing students into two groups and providing each group with two days of in-person lessons a week and the rest online.

As the number of entirely remote students increases, it would be easier to socially distance those who remain. The district is planning to have no lunch initially because of the difficulty of separating students in groups of 50 or fewer.

District 86 officials said they are trying to get the state's definition of a wall for social distancing purposes, so they can use temporary walls to separate students at lunch. As of a recent meeting, the officials said they had yet to get an answer.

Classes are in session at Hinsdale Central and South starting Aug. 17. The district serves about 4,200 students.
