Last call for Poppy Poster Contest entries!

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1941 is calling for entries to its annual Poppy Poster Contest open to students in grades 4 through 12.

Are you a young artist? Are you looking for a way to honor veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States? You should enter our annual Poppy Poster Contest!

WHY Every year the American Legion and Auxiliary remember our fallen soldiers through the Poppy Donation program to collect funds to support military members and their families. The Poppy Poster Contest is a way for the youth of our community to learn about these men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice and honor their memories.

WHO
All students in grades 4 through 12, including special education are invited to participate in this contest. A winner from each grade level will be selected by the Poppy Poster Committee of American Legion & Auxiliary 1941 and will move forward to the state competition.

WHAT Posters must:

  • Be hand-made using tempera, water colors, crayons, oil paint, handmade paper cutouts, ink or cut textures, acrylics or markers (no computer graphics).
  • Be created on poster board size 12” x 18” -- direction may be either portrait or landscape.
  • Include a picture of the Flanders Poppy with the stem showing, in the correct color (4 red petals; no leaves; black or green center; green stem). The Memorial Poppy must be a dominant image, and the poster should convey a message of remembrance for US military members killed during their service.
  • Include the words The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary
  • Include a slogan of no more than 10 words (a, an, and, the are not counted; Buddy, Buy cannot be used).
  • Be labeled on the back by filling out the form from the brochure with info below:
  • Name, Address, Phone #, Age, Grade
  • Specify whether Developmental Disability Student
  • Legion Post / Auxiliary Unit name and number & District number
    Robert E. Coulter, Jr. Unit 1941, 5th District
  • School name, school address, school phone number


WHEN Finished posters must be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 8, 2015, by 7pm. Winners will be announced and their posters forwarded to the Department of Illinois by April 17.

WHERE Students may drop off posters to the Robert E. Coulter, Jr., American Legion Hall, 900 South La Grange Road in La Grange on any Monday evening during the weekly bingo game that is held from 5-9pm or by contacting us to make other arrangements. In either case, please email us ahead of time so we know to expect you: usa@auxiliary.AL1941.org

Monetary prizes will be awarded locally and for state winners.
Grand prize for best in state is $500.
State prizes for grades 4 through 9 are $50 for first place, $35 for second place, and $25 for third place.
State prizes for grades 10 through 12 are $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place.

Remember, finished posters must be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 8, 2015, by 7pm.
