Man Scammed Out Of $100K: Hinsdale Police

HINSDALE — An elderly victim in Hinsdale direct deposited $100,000 after a scammer told him he was a sweepstakes winner and needed to pay a processing fee, police said. The crime was reported Dec. 18, but it happened at some point between Aug. 1 and Dec. 1.

The victim lives in the 200 block of West 59th Street, police said. The case is pending.

  • Portrait Phillips, 25, of Chicago, was arrested about 8:30 a.m. Dec. 18 at 55th Street and Interstate 294 on a charge of driving with a suspended license. The suspect was stopped for speeding. The driver was released to appear in court.
  • Julie A. Janik, 49, of Hinsdale, was arrested about 10 p.m. Dec. 19 in the 400 block of South Washington Street on a charge of domestic battery. She is accused of making contact of an insulting or provoking nature with a male family member. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
  • Marcus Bernard Collins, 28, of Bolingbrook, was arrested about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Camberly Court and 55th Street on charges of driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured vehicle and improper lighting. Collins was stopped for the issue of lights. He was released to appear in court.
