Mask Feud Leads To Hinsdale Arrest: Cops

A Hinsdale man attacks another man during an argument in an elevator, police say.

HINSDALE, IL — A long-running mask dispute ended in an arrest late last month when a man attacked another in an elevator at a Hinsdale high-rise, police said.

On the afternoon of July 31, police were called to Spinning Wheel Apartments, 21 Spinning Wheel Road. After an investigation, they arrested Avinoam N. Eden, 47, on a charge of battery, a local ordinance violation. Patch obtained the police report through a public records request.

According to the report, a man and a woman were in the elevator of the 18-story high-rise when Eden entered. The victim's account is blacked out in the report.

In an interview with police, the 60-year-old woman said while she did not remember the conversation between the men, she saw Eden grab the other man by the throat and start to choke him. She said she told Eden to stop and placed her hand on him. The elevator door opened, and Eden left. The other man followed him down the hallway, police said.

A video with no sound told the story for police. The other man was holding a hamper filled with clothes when Eden entered. Standing along opposite sides of the elevator, the men talked. Then Eden grabbed the other man by the neck with his right hand, holding him for three seconds, the report said. The woman tried to break the two men apart, police said.

Eden told police the dispute started six months ago over masks. He said the other man refused to wear a mask when entering the building, contrary to building rules, police said.

Not long ago, Eden told police, the other man walked by him while he was with his children and called him a "m-----f-----" and walked away, according to the police report.

While in the elevator, Eden said he asked the other man whether he wanted to repeat what he said to him and his children a few weeks before, police said. The man replied by calling Eden a "d-----bag," police said.

Eden said he felt threatened, so he used his hand to push the man away, police said. He said the other man followed him down the hallway.

Eden was taken to the police department, where he was released.
