Overpayment Scams, Bank Incident: Hinsdale Cops
Victims get overpayments and are asked to return some of the money, report says.
HINSDALE, IL — In the last few days, Hinsdale police responded to cases involving overpayment scams, counterfeit money orders, DUIs and bike thefts. Here is information from the latest reports:
Overpayment scams
- A person in the 900 block of North Washington Street reported fraud Nov. 4. The victim received a $3,790 cashier's check for furniture the victim was selling for $1,500 on Craigslist. The victim was instructed to make two $1,000 payments using the difference to cover shipping charges. After completing the payments, the victim found out the cashier's check was fraudulent.
- A resident in the 600 block of North Lincoln Street signed up to be a secret shopper. The resident was instructed to deposit a check in the amount of $1,900 and buy $1,500 worth of eBay cards. The victim gave the suspect card information and later learned the check had bounced and the card balances were cleared out. The report was made Nov. 9. An investigation continues.
Counterfeit

- A man tried to deposit five counterfeit money orders in the amount of $1,000 each about 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at Hinsdale Bank & Trust. Bank employees confiscated the money orders, and the suspect left the bank before police arrived. The man was described as black and wearing a blue and white face mask, gray-hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants.
Fraud
- A resident in the 900 block of Taft Road reported to police Nov. 4 that someone opened a credit card using the resident's information and spent $4,791 at a shopping mall in Atlanta. The incident happened June 25.
DUIs

- Jose A. Flores, 31, of Lyons, was arrested about 9 p.m. Saturday in a parking lot at 500 E. Ogden Ave. on charges of DUI, use of an unsafe tire and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. According to a police report, officers were dispatched to a disturbance in the Whole Foods parking lot. The suspect refused a test of his blood-alcohol content. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
- Nemanja Danilovic, 29, of Wood Dale, was arrested about 5 a.m. Saturday at 55th and Monroe streets on charges of DUI and driving on the wrong side of the road. The suspect was stopped for driving on the wrong side of the road. A test showed the suspect was over the legal limit. The person was released and give a date to appear in court.
Bike thefts
- Someone stole a bicycle valued at $700 in a bike rack between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at Hinsdale Middle School, 100 S. Garfield Road. A bike valued at $450 was stolen between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. the next day at the school. Both were unlocked.
Driving violation
- Ignacio Sebastian, 48, of Countryside, was cited about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at Route 83 and Chicago Avenue on a charge of driving with a suspended license. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
