Waterparks, pools and aquatic facilities hosted a swim lesson at the same time around the world, aiming to break the world record for the largest swim lesson and to build awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim.

More than 900 locations registered to participate, including the Clarendon Hills Park District.

Instructors encouraged young swimmers as they got comfortable jumping into the pool, blowing bubbles, making arm strokes and diving for plastic rings.

Laura Reinke, recreation supervisor for the Park District, said the lesson is meant to emphasize that swimming is a fun and important life skill for everyone.

She said the Kick-Off Summer Swim Lesson and the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson have made for a good start to the summer. Fun events and programs will continue through the season at the Lions Park Pool.
