Podiatrist Gary Hoberman Shares the Secrets of Problem-Free Feet

As we age, it is important to stay active and engaged so we can continue to live healthy and rewarding lives. Unfortunately, it is hard to stay active when inflicted with uncomfortable foot ailments like ingrown toenails, joint conditions, bunions, hammer toes, and circulation issues.

Statistically speaking, older adults have an increased risk of developing foot ailments that can impair their mobility and negatively impact their general health. In fact, the US National Center for Health Statistics reports that impairment of the lower extremities is a top cause of activity restriction in older people.

To help improve the foot health and overall quality of life of its residents, The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills is hosting an informational lecture on the identification and prevention of common geriatric foot ailments led by veteran podiatrist Gary Hoberman.

Hoberman, who has practiced podiatry for over 30 years, is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and a member of the podiatry practice Podiatry Plus, which has office locations in Chicago and Arlington Heights.

When it comes to geriatric foot health, Hoberman preaches the importance of prevention. He recognizes that the risks of surgery are not worthwhile for many older adults, and he provides his patients with alternative solutions to their foot issues.

“Our goal is to prevent the need for an acute treatment. We do that typically by following up with patients about once every two to three months, which is the typical Medicare protocol for preventative care,” said Hoberman.

According to Hoberman, choosing quality foot wear is one of the easiest methods of prevention for people of all ages. While it’s obviously important to wear high quality shoes when going out, it’s equally important to wear supportive, comfortable footwear at home, says Hoberman.

“It’s very important what’s on your feet when you’re not wearing shoes. You should have quality, supportive sandals or slippers. Not just a little flimsy slipper,” said Hoberman.

Proper hygiene is another crucial component of good foot health. Hoberman says when showering, older adults should wash and dry between their toes to prevent common fungus problems.

Additionally, Hoberman stresses the importance of seeking immediate care when any foot issue arises. He says, if you have a foot ailment, it is always better to get it checked out by a qualified professional sooner rather than later.

“If something doesn’t seem right, don’t wait for it to get better on its own. Say something early so that you can be examined appropriately, whether it’s by the frontline of caregivers at the Birches or a podiatrist,” said Hoberman.

Hoberman hopes that Birches residents will come away with a better understanding of proper foot care and will feel motivated to seek a foot care provider who has a high standard of service like Podiatry Plus. Hoberman’s lecture will take place on Thursday, May 15 at 2:00 pm in the third floor activity room.
