Relatively Few Low-Income Students At Lyons And Hinsdale

Hinsdale Central has lowest rate among area schools surveyed by Patch.

HINSDALE, IL — Compared to the rest of the state, relatively few students at Lyons, Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools come from low-income families. At Lyons, the percentage is 12 percent, while Hinsdale Central and South are 6 percent and 27 percent, respectively. The statewide average is just under half.

Hinsdale Central has the lowest percentage of low-income students among high schools surveyed in the area, while Hinsdale South has more low-income students than most schools in DuPage County.

There are schools with even better numbers than Hinsdale Central in Illinois. Only 2 percent of students at New Trier High School in suburban Cook County come from low-income families. Stevenson High School in Lake County is at 5 percent. On the other end of the scale is East St. Louis High School on the Illinois side of the St. Louis suburbs. There, 97 percent come from low-income families.

The state bases the low-income numbers on the percentage of students eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches, live in court-sanctioned care, or whose families receive public aid.
