Seven Hinsdale Central Students Named National Merit Scholars

Seven Hinsdale Central seniors have been named National Merit scholars and have received a $2,500 scholarship.

HINSDALE, IL — This year's National Merit $2,500 scholarship winners have been announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and several Hinsdale Central High School students are among the winners.

According to a release, the 2,500 merit scholar winners were chosen from more than 15,000 outstanding finalists.

The merit scholars from Hinsdale Central are:

  • Alex Choi, from Oak Brook. Probable career field: Biomedical Engineering.
  • Carolyn Chun, from Oak Brook. Probable career field: International Relations.
  • Helen Hu, from Darien. Undecided career field.
  • Chitra Balakrishnan, from Hinsdale. Probable career field: Law.
  • Rachel Wang, from Westmont. Probable career field: Computer Science.
  • Eric Chang, from Willowbrook. Probable career field: Law.
  • Shubhankar Deo, from Willowbrook. Probable career field: Linguistics.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation said these Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
