HINSDALE, IL — Some school districts in the Chicago suburbs are going remote because of pandemic-related staffing issues. But that's not been the case in Hinsdale High School District 86.

On Tuesday, only 13 of the district's 290 teachers were absent because of a positive coronavirus test, isolation or quarantine, according to the district. That works out to less than 5 percent. Another 20 district employees were out Tuesday for the same reasons.

In a statement before the winter break, Superintendent Tammy Prentiss said she did not expect the district to go to remote learning this month, despite the increase in coronavirus cases. Since then, the pandemic has worsened, with the numbers of cases in area towns breaking records. Unlike earlier surges, this one is resulting in relatively few deaths.
