Tollway Project Noise Upsets Hinsdale Residents
State agency says it will work to minimize the problem.
HINSDALE, IL — Construction of the railroad bridge over Interstate 294 overnight Thursday resulted in loud noise that upset residents, who complained to the village. The village government said it, in turn, notified the Illinois Tollway.
The tollway sent back a reply, saying it was doing pile driving in the center median for the BNSF Railroad bridge. In its letter, the tollway promised to minimize the problem going forward.
"While this type of work has occurred on this project previously, it had not been performed overnight, which we believe is the primary cause for concern," the letter said. "That was expedited as a result of the lane closure that was allowed by the Tollway due to recent reduction in traffic volume, and that work has now concluded."

Throughout the last few weeks, overnight work has been required to coordinate with the railroad's schedule and the demands of the project, the agency said. In February, residents were notified of potential overnight work.
Because of residents' concerns and the "unanticipated impact" on area homes, the tollway said it was committed to working with contractors to minimize this type of work from occurring overnight.

"In the event there are instances where pile driving work is absolutely necessary overnight, residents will receive notice in advance," the tollway said. "That said, at this time we believe it will be minimal."
