Two Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Students Awarded College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships

One student from Clarendon Hills and one student from Hinsdale were awarded National Merit Scholarships for their chosen colleges.

HINSDALE-CLARENDON HILLS, IL — One Clarendon Hills student and one Hinsdale student have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 3,200 winners of scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities, according to a release.

The two students awarded scholarships are:

  • Austin Cunniff, of Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale Central High School. Probable career field: chemical engineering. Cunniff was awarded a National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship.
  • Andrew Karstrand, of Hinsdale, Hinsdale Central High School. Probable career field: computer science. Karstrand was awarded a National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution, according to a release. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
