Hoffman Estates Student Named National Daily Point of Light Honoree

Points of Light, the national volunteer organization founded by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, named Michael-Christopher Suman, 17, an honoree on 07/18/2026. The organization recognizes one volunteer per day.

Suman founded Detailing for MCAS in 2021, because of his mothers rare disease, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). The organization has raised more than $150,000 for research and awareness related to mast cell activation syndrome, a condition in which the immune system's mast cells release chemical signals inappropriately. Symptoms are episodic and frequently environmental, and patients often see multiple specialists before receiving a diagnosis.

"I started this because my mother spent years being told nothing was wrong. I didn't set out to build an organization. I set out to make that process shorter and easier for somebody else." Suman said.

The organization's work extends beyond fundraising. Suman developed MastCell Tracker, a mobile application for logging symptoms over time, and the Neuropic Home, a device that monitors environmental conditions to help patients identify triggers.

"We do this for people who feel they don't have a voice," said Hyes (Volunteer at Detailing for MCAS) .
