Heroes Trail Markers In Homer Glen Honor Military Branches

People will be able to use trail markers to track the distance they have traveled and their location in the case of an emergency.

HOMER GLEN, IL — Through funding provided by the Homer Glen Foundation, cyclists and pedestrians using the Village’s Heroes Trail System will now be able to use trail markers to monitor the distance they have traveled and communicate their location in the case of an emergency. The village said the new trail posts feature four different identification decals.

The Village of Homer Glen Heroes Trail system logo is followed by a colored mile marker and a seal for a branch of the military. According to the village, the bottom decal shows the post number, which can be given to emergency responders to aid in establishing a more precise location.

There are currently five segments to the trail identified with the following colors and military branches:

  • North Trail, Red Reflective Mile Marker, Army
  • Northeast Trail, Blue Reflective Mile Marker, Air Force
  • West Trail, White Reflective Mile Marker, Navy
  • South Trail, Black Reflective Mile Marker, Marines
  • Southeast Trail, Orange Reflective Mile Marker, National Guard
  • Erin Hills Trail, Yellow Reflective Mile Marker, Coast Guard

The Homer Glen Foundation also hosts an annual Mike Hike 5K Run/Walk to raise funds to support the troops and trails, in memory of PFC Michael C. Olivieri.

Kathy Young, president of the foundation said in a release, “We are excited to see these trail markers installed and proud to honor our local heroes and those who serve in our military, and we look forward to partnering with the village on additional projects in the future.”
