Homer Glen To Ask Voters About Installation Of License Plate Readers

An advisory question on the ballot will be about the installation and use of license plate readers in the Village.

HOMER GLEN, IL — Homer Glen voters will see an advisory question on their April 4 ballots, concerning the installation and use of license plate readers in the Village.

At its Wednesday Board meeting, the Village Board approved a resolution to add the question to appear on the ballot.

The question will read: "Shall the Village of Homer Glen install and use license plate readers at public access roads designated by the Village Board to support public safety agencies provided the data collected is confidential and is destroyed within 30 days unless it is the subject matter of an ongoing investigation?"

Several communities in the Chicago area have approved license plate readers at the main exit and entry points of their towns. Homer Glen doesn't have the readers currently, but nearby Lemont, Romeoville, the Will County Sheriff's Office, Joliet, Bolingbrook, New Lenox and Mokena do.

The consolidated election is April 4.
