Homer Glen, Lockport Voters Guide: 2022 General Election

HOMER GLEN-LOCKPORT, IL — Early voting is underway at some locations, and Election Day is less than a month away. In Homer Glen and Lockport, early voting will begin Oct. 24 at Lockport Township, 1463 S. Farrell Road, Suite 102, and Homer Township, 14350 W. 151st St.

Other county-wide early voting locations include:

• Will County Clerk's Office, 302 N. Chicago St., in Joliet (opened Sept. 29 for early voting)
• Joliet Park District, 3000 W. Jefferson St., Joliet (opening Oct. 24 for early voting)
• Joliet Public Library, 3395 Black Road, in Joliet (opening Oct. 24 for early voting)

State laws require early voters to provide a valid photo ID to an election official before receiving a ballot to vote early. Valid forms of ID include a current driver's license, a driver's license or state ID, university/college ID or another government-issued ID with a photo, such as a passport.

There is no vote by mail drop box at Lockport Township or Homer Township, but there is a drop box at White Oak Library-Lockport Branch, 121 E. Eighth St., according to the clerk's office.

The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Nov. 3.

If you’re not registered to vote, you can register online through Oct. 23. If you want to register by mail, your application must be postmarked by Oct. 11. Voters can also register to vote on election day at your polling place.

On Election Day, polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mail-in ballots must also be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 8.

There is also a county-wide proposition to levy a new tax for providing community mental health facilities and services. The referendum that will appear on the ballot calls for a .05 percent tax on homeowners' equalized assessed value, or EAV, on their homes. That would amount to $50 on a home with a $100,000 EAV.

Lockport voters who reside within District 91 boundaries will also see a proposition on their ballots. The ballot will have a proposition to increase the limiting rate of Lockport School District 91.

If approved, the limiting rate increase proceeds would be used to maintain, repair and update both of the district's schools, Milne Grove and Kelvin Grove.

Illinois voters are also asked to weigh in on an amendment to the state constitution allowing workers the right to organize and bargain collectively.

The bill, which was drafted by the Illinois General Assembly in 2021, provides that “employees shall have the fundamental right to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing for the purpose of negotiating wages, hours and working conditions and to “protect their economic welfare and safety at work.”

In order for the measure to pass, 60 percent of Illinois voters will need to vote in favor of the amendment for it to be added to the constitution.
