Homer Library Construction Continues, Should Wrap Up By Fall

The construction adds 4,200 square feet to the library, including a youth services expansion and a community reading room.

HOMER GLEN, IL — Construction on the Homer Township Public Library should be finished in the summer or early fall, Library Director Sheree Kozel-La Ha shared with Patch.

The project, which is the final building phase of a long-range plan for the library, includes a youth services addition, community reading room addition, space renovations and outdoor additions.

The project is self-funded by the library, and a strategic plan, building plan, and financial plan were reviewed to strategically undertake an expansion with no additional tax for residents, according to the library.

In 2020, library consultant, Anders Dahlgren, detailed the appropriate space for the library to be 53,600 square feet to meet use and service goals. However, that is not possible with the library's property, according to the library.

A commitment was made to position the library to meet the community's needs, and the Homer Library expanded to 24,000 square feet in 2012 and adds 4,200 square feet in 2023, Kozel-La Ha shared.

With the final phase of 4,200 square feet nearing completion, the library will add a Community Reading Room, Youth Services expansion and program room, new study rooms, additional parking and more.

Outside, a collaboration with the Homer Glen Foundation honors those who’ve served with a Veterans Memorial Fountain in the new Art Garden gazebo area, Kozel-La Ha said.

The library remains open during construction and continues its services and programming.
